JEAN–BAPTISTE CARPEAUX

(1827 – 1875)
L'Afrique. Plaster with grey / brownish patina. Signed J Bti Carpeaux inside the base.
H 68 cm.

Base repaired.

The bust on offer, titled "Pourquoi naître esclave", comes from a series of designs by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in the period between 1867 and 1870, as a preparatory work for a figure on the fountain "des Quatres-Parties-du-Monde", also known as the "Fontaine de l'observatoire" because of its location on the Avenue de l'observatoire in Paris. On that fountain, four female figures representing the continents carry a globe with a firmanent. The bust on offer is part of the design for the Continent of Africa. Versions in different materials, such as terracotta, bronze, plaster and marble, are known and are part of the collections of important museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York or the Petit Palais in Paris. Unlike the bust on offer, these have the title "Pourquoi naître esclave" engraved inside the base.
