At the beginning of 1895 Gustave Loiseau moved to Moret-sur-Loing, following in the footsteps of Alfred Sisley, who had settled there six years earlier. Inspired by the idyllic surroundings, he produced vibrant landscapes, transferred en plein air onto the canvas. He frequented the local areas, including the small village of Tournedos-sur-Seine, where the present painting was also created. Loiseau repeatedly captured this exact view of the river bank with the footpath and farmhouses on multiple occasions and in different seasons.

The present work shows a summer landscape in rich hues of blue and green. It was painted around the turn of the century, a time when Loiseau was at the height of his artistic production in terms of the quality of his painting. By then, the artist had already become a well-known painter thanks to the support of the Paris art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. This self-confidence permeates the paintings of this period, revealing to the viewer the grounds for the significant increase in enthusiasm for Loiseau’s paintings in recent years.
