Hisa Õta is a performer of traditional Japanese theater who tours Europe under the name "Hanako" at the beginning of the 19th century. When August Rodin meets her in Paris in 1906, his artistic fascination is immediately aroused. He creates an extensive cycle of sculptures and drawings portraying the dancer.

The Japanese woman is different from Rodin’s usual models. Her foreign and exotic appearance for the European audience inspires the sculptor to explore new forms of expression. Rodin is particularly impressed by Hanako’s emotive facial expressions and her ability to embody strong feelings in her performances. This leads him to use her as a model for numerous sculptures that capture not only her beauty but also the depth and drama of her portrayals. In the series of busts that he makes of Hanako, Rodin shows the creative range of her expression: from strong tension to deep melancholy. These portrait heads, made mostly in terracotta and plaster, are important studies of human physiognomy and emotion, as they reflect the complexity of the human soul in a form unusual for Rodin.

According to the dedication on the back of the head, the sculpture offered was a gift from Rodin to the artist Hanako. Through the Galerie Moos in Zurich, it eventually became part of the important Winterthur collection of Richard Bühler, where it has remained in the family's possession to this day
