A FINE BRONZE FIGURE OF A HIGH RANKING KAGYU-MONK. Tibet, 16th c. Height 22 cm. Silver and copper inlays. Inscription.

Tibet, 16. Jh. H 22 cm.
Bronze mit Silber- und Kupfereinlagen sowie Resten von Vergoldung auf den Hautpartien. Er sitzt auf einem Lotoskissen, das wiederum auf einem halbrunden Sockel liegt, der mit zwei Schneelöwen und einem Vajra geschmückt ist. Die Rechte ist in der Geste der Argumentation erhoben, die Linke hält ein feines Lebenswassergefäss. Auf dem Kopf trägt er die typische Meditationskappe der Kagyu-Mönche. Am Sockelrand Inschrift.

You entered the abode of Mahayana of Maitreya’s heart, / Practiced the fundamental meaning of the authentic Dharma’s ultimate essence / And perseverate in realization like an immoveable ocean. / Before sGrub brgyud bsTan ‘dzin (Drubgyü Tenzin) I bow down. / This portrait of that master, like the wish fulfilling jewel, / was executed out of the purest intention. / Therefore, may the aspiration of the Lama – the supreme guide – be accomplished / And may all sentient beings, our own mothers, attain Buddhahood! Auspicious!
