FRAGMENT OF AN ENAMEL SAUCER,

Augsburg, beginning of the 18th century.
Copper, painted with 3 oval reserves depicting Cupid on his travels. Originally, in a bronze mount.
D 9.2 cm.

The depiction of the travelling Cupid was of great importance in Augsburg at the beginning of the 18th century. It goes back to a very popular wedding poem "Der reisende Cupido" by Christian Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau, whose edition of 1703 was illustrated by the Augsburg engraver Johann Andreas Thelott (1655-1734).
