Lot 2852 - A189 Montres-Bracelets & Montres de Poche - mercredi, 26. juin 2019, 17h00

Patek Philippe, Jumbo Nautilus, ca. 1979.

Stainless steel.
Reference 3700/1, case No. 538864 with sapphire glass, black dial with applied indices and luminous hands. Flat Automatic movement No. 1308986 Cal. 28-255 C. Nautilus stainless-steel link band with fold-over clasp, wrist size ca. 18.5 cm. D 42 x 44 mm.
With an excerpt from the Patek Philippe Archives: Manufactured in 1979, and sold in December 1980. The watch is in an exceptionally fine condition. The case- and band contours are very well preserved, the band links are very tight. The Sigma dial is virtually flawless.

What brought the watch world into turmoil more than 40 years ago, has meanwhile developed into a cult object: The sporty-elegant Nautilus by Patek Philippe. A steel watch did not fit in with the ostentatiousness of gold luxury watches - especially not a watch with this extravagant shape and size. Patek Philippe's goal was to appeal to a new generation of active, sporty people. The launch of the watch was accompanied by an advertising campaign that was as original as it was brash: "One of the most expensive watches in the world is made of steel!"
