Plants are among Emil Nolde's preferred subjects for still lifes. Close to the house, built in 1927 on a secluded mound in Seebüll, Nolde arranged an impressive flower garden. Reth walls, stern and streucher offer protection for the flowers blown through by the storm wind.
Orange is a very important colour for Nolde, which is often dominant in his works. The intense luminosity and the different nuances between red and yellow of the hue serve him both for his paintings and for his watercolors. However, the beautiful watercolour "Orange Tree" is a rarity, since Nolde rarely depicts oranges. But as exotic fruits they also refer to an important theme of Nolde.
