A POLYCHROME PAINTING OF THE RAKAN PANTHAKA (HANTAKA).

Japan, 18./19th c. 114 × 54 cm (painting).
Ink and colours on silk, brocade mounting. Some creases. Framed under glass.

Provenance: Old private collection from Southern Germany.
An almost identical painting by Ryôzen (ca. 1328-ca. 1360), a Buddhist painter and monk of the Rinzai temple Tôfuku-ji in Kyôtô, is located in the National Museum for Asian Art, the Freer/Sackler, Smithsonian Institute, accession no. F1904.304. The portrait of Arhat no. 10 belongs to a set of the 16 Arhat, painted in the so-called ryûmin style (ryûmin-yô) which refers to the Chinese painter Li Gonglin (or Longmian, jap. Ryûmin) (1049–1106).
