This large-format figure of an oath taker was created in preparation for the monumental mural in the council chamber of the town hall of Hanover. Hodler had accepted this commission in 1911 (cf. also lots 3037 and 3038). The painting shows a variant of the fourth main figure from the right. To incorporate this figure into the overall composition, Hodler altered the position of the upper body as well as that of the head.
