These vases of impressive size are typical showpieces produced by the Sèvres Manufactory for the furnishings of Royal Palaces. The recessed metal base in the neck of the vase indicates its original use as a so-called torchère, i.e. a monumental floor lamp. The model "Vase forme Balustre" is recorded both with and without bronze mountis in the Archives of the Sèvres Manufactory. The shape was originally designed by J. Peyre around 1849 and adapted by his son A. Peyre under the title "Vase forme Balustre pour Torchères". The vase type is also listed as "Dieterle" in the Manufactory's hand-written archives. A pair of baluster-shaped vases similar in shape and size, also with gilt bronzes, can be found in the Musée d'Orsay (Inv. No. 19467). Another example is depicted in: Marcelle Brunet & Tamara Préaux, Sèvres des origines à nos jours, Fribourg, 1978, p. 299, Ill. 405.
