An important Istoriato maiolica piece from the workshop of Guido da Merlino, one of the most prominent majolica workshops of Urbino between 1542 and 1551. Of the important personalities among the majolica artists from this workshop was also Francesco Durantino, who spent his early creative years there. Epigraphically traditional examples for the workshop are held today in many international museums and public collections. Included among them are the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig and the collections of the Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar (J. Lessmann, Italienische Majoliken, Braunschweig 1979, p. 175; E. Reisinger, in: Italienische Fayencen der Renaissance, Nuremberg 2004, p. 79-96).
