This unique Madonna "in veste dalmatica" originates from one of the most famous pilgrimage churches in Italy, the "Santuario Basilica Pontificia della Santa Casa di Loreto".

In the basilica is a monumental marble shrine, the Santa Casa, from the early 16th century (Andrea Sansovino), in which stands the image of the Holy Mother of God "in veste dalmatica" for veneration. According to legend, it is the house where the Annunciation Angel appeared to the Virgin Mary of Nazareth and since the 14th century has been a place of pilgrimage, as also evidenced by numerous notes on corresponding devotionalities. The tradition of this image has been continued over the centuries. For the history of the Madonna di Loreto, cf. F. Sabbion, Con polvere della Santa Casa, in: Ceramica Antica 1998, p. 68-71.

Italian Madonna depictions in maiolica have been known since the late 15th century, including outstanding examples from Faenza, but also from other production centres of Romagna and the Marches, especially from Urbino.
