LATE-RENAISSANCE IRON CLOCK WITH FRONT PENDULUM

Southern Germany or Switzerland, ca. 1660/80.
Wrought iron. Enclosed case, painted later with gold-colored foliage and the head of an angel on a red ground. Decorated with scrolled leaves on three sides. The bell cage decorated with stylized acanthus leaves, painted chapter ring with the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals. Movement with solid square pillars, the upper part twisted. Three mechanisms arranged one behind the other: Movement with verge escapement and front pendulum, and two striking mechanisms for striking the 1/4-hour and the hour on two bells. Probably later conversion of a wheel balance.
16 × 15.5 × 36 cm.

Movement highly cleaned, case probably later.

A beautiful and finely crafted movement, probably originally with a wheel balance. The non-visible part of the frame features decorative elements. A slightly earlier clock with a comparable pillar frame, and with a moon phase and a wheel balance, is described as being from Southern Germany, ca. 1620, and illustrated in: Fridolin Staub: Eine Sammlung alter Uhren. Gipf-Oberfrick 2000. p. 56, No. 33.
