PICTORIAL PANEL DEPICTING SCENES FROM THE LEGEND OF SAINT MEINRAD

Probably Schwyz or Central Switzerland, dated 1509, inscribed Stuckli.
Sequence of images depicting the legend of Saint Meinrad. The composition is arranged in the shape of a cross with a central cartouche divided into four parts, one side with the figure of Saint Meinrad, the other side with the figure of Saint Anne. The top of the panel features scenes of martyrdom and torture. One beam of the cross is inscribed: Von S. Meinrats L[x]en stuckli 1509.
26.5 × 23 cm.

Cracks and fissures. Repairs to the lead. Paintwork rubbed.

According to legend, two vagrants visited the hermit on 21 January 861 (see cartouche, top left). Meinrad welcomed the vagrants with his usual hospitality (see cartouche, top right), but soon saw through the evil intentions of his guests. Thereupon, they slew him and fled (see cartouche, bottom left), but were pursued up to Zurich by Meinrad's two ravens. In Zurich, they were recognized, condemned and executed (probably cartouche, top left and right corners). Meinrad's body was brought to Reichenau Abbey and buried there.
The legend of St. Meinrad was first illustrated in Basel printing houses ca. 1481/82 and enjoyed great popularity. The present pictorial panel is strongly based on models of that time.
