RUYSDAEL, SALOMON VAN

Salomon van Ruysdael was one of the most important Dutch landscape painters of the Golden Age. Born in Naarden in Gooiland as Salomon de Go(o)yer, he later called himself Salomon van Ruysdael, like his brother Isaack (1599–1677), probably in reference to the Ruijschdaal castle near his father's home. He was the uncle of the probably most famous landscape painter of the 17th century, Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael (1628–1682). Nothing is known about his artistic training.

In 1623 he joined the Haarlem Guild of St Luke and his earliest dated work is from 1626, in which the influence of Esias van der Velde (1587-1630), who was active in Haarlem from 1609 to 1618, is clear. Furthermore, his early work is distinguished by his exploration of the oeuvre of Jan van Goyen (1596–1656) and Pieter de Molijn (1595–1661). Although Salomon van Ruysdael was not to leave Haarlem again until the end of his life, his landscapes prove that he must have visited Leiden, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Arnhem, Alkmaar, Rhenen, Dordrecht and Egmond.
