David Teniers was an extremely versatile painter, draughtsman and curator known for his extensive output. A leading Flemish genre painter of his time, Teniers is particularly known today for his peasant scenes. Teniers' most important teacher was his father, David Teniers the Elder (1582–1649). Later, he was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) and Adriaen Brouwer (1605/06–1638). In 1633 he was admitted to the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp, of which he became dean in 1645. Rubens was witness at his wedding in 1637 to Anna Brueghel, the daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625). Teniers was appointed court painter in Brussels in 1651. As such, he looked after the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. In 1664 he founded the Antwerp Academy, where young artists were trained in drawing and sculpture. His son David Teniers III was active as a tapestry painter.
