„Die Kunst soll erheben und erheitern“, wie Eduard Grützner einst selbst sagte (Balogh 1991, S. 4). Und so nähert sich Grützner ( 1846–1925) aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven seiner künstlerischen Vorliebe, mit humoristischen Darstellungen zu jonglieren. Mit flinkem Pinselstrich präsentiert er in amüsanter Weise detailreiche Szenen aus dem Klosteralltag und schenkt man Grützners Darstellungen von Geistlichen Glauben, so muss dieses Klosterleben ein heiteres Vergnügen gewesen sein. Neben Carl Spitzweg (1808–1885) und Franz von Defregger (1835–1921) zählt Eduard von Grützner zu den bedeutendsten Münchner Genremalern in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Entdeckt und gefördert vom Dorfgeistlichen seines Geburtsortes Groß-Karlowitz, erlernte er nach seiner Gymnasialausbildung das Handwerk des Zeichners an der Kunstgewerbeschule von Hermann Dyck (1812–1874) in München. Danach zog es ihn zu Johann Georg Hiltensperger (1806–1890) und Alexander Ströhuber (1814–1882), die ihm die Schönheitsideale der Antike näher brachten. Im Anschluss an seine Ausbildung an der Münchner Akademie liess sich Eduard Grützner 1867 von dem wichtigsten Vertreter der realistischen Historienmalerei, Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826–1886), inspirieren. Dieser Kontakt sollte sich als besonders prägend für sein weiteres Künstlerleben herausstellen. 1886 wurde Grützner Professor an der Münchner Akademie und 1916 in den Adelsstand erhoben.
