Stanislas Lépines Anfänge seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn stehen ganz in der Manier seines Vorbilds Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891). Bald entwickelte der 1836 in Caen geborene Maler seinen ganz eigenen unverkennbaren Stil und richtete sein Interesse vorwiegend auf Darstellungen der Seine und der unmittelbaren Umgebung. Diskrete Farbtöne sowie ein flüssiger Pinselstrich und ein stellenweise nahezu lasierend wirkender Farbauftrag werden in Lépines Kompositionen Vorzug gegeben. Dies und seine helle Farbpalette, mehrheitlich bestehend aus äusserst zarten Grau- und Grüntönen, lassen Lépine zu den Künstlern zählen, die den impressionistischen Landschaften seiner Nachfolger den Weg bereiten. Im Besonderen stiessen die raffinierte Lichtwirkung sowie die kontemplative Stimmung bei zeitgenössischen Kritikern auf Anerkennung.
