David Hockney wird 1937 in der britischen Bradford geboren. Sein Vater war Hobbymaler; schon von klein auf wird David Hockney künstlerisch gefördert, indem er privaten Malunterricht erhält. Er studiert an der Bradford School of Art, an der sich seine exzeptionelle Begabung im Zeichnen offenbart. 1959 schreibt sich Hockney am Royal College of Art in London ein, wird dort neben Peter Blake in der Ausstellung Young Contemporaries ausgestellt, die eine Ankunft der britischen Pop-Art ankündigt. Hockneys Frühwerk weist durchaus expressionistische Elemente auf, die teilweise Francis Bacon ähneln. Zugleich versinnbildlichen sie auch alltägliche und kommerzielle Themen, die auf Hockneys Bezug zur Pop-Art zurückzuführen sind. Gelegentlich stellt er homosexuelle Szenen, wie etwa in We Two Boys Together Clinging (1961) dar – zu einer Zeit, in der Homosexualität in Grossbritannien noch strafbar ist. In den 1960ern unterrichtet er unter anderem in Kent, Los Angeles und Berkeley sowie in Hamburg. 1963 folgt die erste Einzelausstellung in der Kasmin’s Gallery New York, infolgedessen gibt Hockney seine Lehrtätigkeit auf, da er feststellt, als Künstler mehr verdienen zu können. Seine Werke aus dieser Zeit basieren hauptsächlich auf Fotografien, die er während seiner regelmässigen Besuche in den 1960ern in Kalifornien aufnimmt. Ebenso entstehen Drucke und Porträts von Freunden. Unter anderem zieht es ihn ab 1964 nach Beirut, Marokko, Frankreich, Japan, Südostasien und Australien. 1968 nimmt er an der documenta 4 und 1977 an der documenta 6 in Kassel teil – 1974 wird in Jack Hazans Film A Bigger Splash unter anderem das Ende seiner Beziehung zu Peter Schlesinger 1971 thematisiert und die Entstehung des Gemäldes Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) dokumentiert. 1979 ist Hockney Mitbegründer des Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Nach einer vierjährigen Pause wendet sich Hockney 1984 wieder der Malerei zu; welche durchaus von einem Stilwandel geprägt ist: diese Kompositionen weisen nun Einflüsse von Henri Matisse und Pablo Picasso auf. Gleichzeitig bedient sich der Künstler neuen technischen Möglichkeiten – so druckt er beispielsweise bei seinen Home Made Prints Bilder aus dem Farbkopierer und überträgt diese mit Faxgeräten. Auch entstehen vermehrt grossformatige Lithografien, welche 1985 in Kasmin’s Gallery in London ausgestellt werden. Seitdem finden sich immer wieder Grossformate, oft Landschaftsmotive bei Hockney. Hockneys Gesamtwerk sticht durch vielschichtige und zahlreiche Werkperioden, Wechsel zwischen realistischer und stilisierender Darstellung hervor. Ebenso bei der Wahl der Objekte ist seine Kunst vielseitig: Porträts Selbstporträts, Tiere, Landschaften, Stillleben, Lithografien, Zeichnungen und Aquarelle. Hinzu kommen später digitale Fotos, iPad-Drucke sowie 3D-Fotografien; eine solche Vielfalt spricht auch für Hockneys Begeisterung für Technologie. Zu Künstlern, die ihn inspirieren, zählen unter anderem Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Stravinsky, und Lorrain. Der britische Maler, Fotograf und Bühnenbildner lebt und arbeitet in der Normandie.
