A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF MAHAVAIROCANA.

Central Java, 9th/10th c. Height 21 cm.

Bronze with later gilding on red lacquer. Seated on a lotus pedestal with staggered leaves he has raised the hands in bodhyagri-mudra. The figure itself is solid cast, the throne is hollow. The eyes are inlaid with little pearls, originally probably with silver.

The curved double-edged watered-steel blade with raised medial ridge and decorated with chiselled lions to the forte. The gilt damascened decoration at the iron hilt showing hunting scenes and animals in combat. Scabbard slightly worn. Minor nick.

Turkey, 19th c. Length (blade) 17.5 cm, length (total) 29.5 cm.

With single-edged watered blade, the forte on either side decorated with a panel of gold damascening floral motif which continues as a band on the curved back edge. The greyish-green faceted jade with a central stone-set filigree. The silver scabbard chased and engraved with leafy scrolls, with filigree and stone-set locket and a bud-form chape. Inlays partly lost.

Straight double-edged blade with central double-ridge, gold-damascened foliate design and inscriptive panels. The wooden hilt and scabbard overlaid in metal with incised floral decoration and set with coral forming floral motifs. The scabbard partly engraved with foliate design. Some missing inlays.

Decoration extending to the forte, the blade with fullered back edge inscribed in gold overlay within cartouches, the red leather scabbard with mounts decorated in repoussé. Some inlays lost.
