JAN HÁLA
Swiss private collection, received by descent and owned by the same family for more than 40 years.
Jan Hala was born in 1890 in what is now the Czech Republic. He studied philosophy and art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
In 1923 Hala set off on travels through the rural areas of Slovakia, where he visited the village of Važec in the High Tatras. He decided to settle there and stayed until his death in 1959. Previously focused on landscapes and social issues, Hala then focused on the local land, the nature and the people. He was especially fascinated by Czech and Slovak folklore. Around 1930 Hala found his style. He portrayed the everyday lives of the people of Važec, often exploring motifs of women at work, brides, folk festivals and mothers with their children.
Produced in 1941, the present painting also belongs to this creative phase of the artist. The sitter is wrapped in the typical folk costume. Sitting on a white blanket in the grass with a baby in a basket and a parasol, she enjoys the summer day in the country.
The easily accessible motifs on which Hala concentrated are very popular with the general public and his works are today located in museums such as the Slovak National Museum.
