Maurice Denis always viewed art as a combination of form, symbol, and spiritual substance. His sketchbooks served not only as a means for quick studies, but as places of intense reflection and artistic development. In these, he kept landscapes from his travels, figure studies, and compositional drafts—often in pencil or chalk, sometimes tinted with watercolor, colored pencil, or wax crayon. Denis worked systematically, numbered his sheets, and viewed his "Carnets de croquis" as complete, cohesive working instruments, and an essential part of his artistic thinking. The small books, available in various formats and sizes, provide an intimate glimpse into the creative process integral to the art of Maurice Denis.
