VASE WITH SATYRS, CENTERPIECE OF AN ANDIRON
Veneto/Padua, probably ca. 1600. After a model for an andiron by Niccolò Roccatagliata (1593–1636).
Bronze with a brown patina. Triple-lobed belly with drapery and ram heads, a drawn-in neck with three free-standing satyrs, on a drawn-in, profiled base. On a later red and white veined marble plinth.
H (with plinth) 32 cm.
Provenance:
This vase is most likely a central piece of an andiron. The vase on offer is almost identical to the central segment of an andiron in the Bargello Museum in Florence. That example is attributed to the Venetian sculptor Niccolò Roccatagliata (see Fototeca Zeri, Inv. No. 205442). Another example of a vase fragment, also attributed to Roccatagliata, can be found in the Wallace Collection (Inv. No. S80). The vase in the Wallace Collection shows a slightly different iconography (the satyrs, for example, are replaced by harpies), but follows the example from Florence in its design.
