This painting by Aert van der Neer was created in 1640, at the beginning of a decade of intense artistic experimentation. During this phase of his career, he began to perfect his twilight and moonlit landscapes. He had settled in Amsterdam in 1628 and quickly achieved considerable success there.
The gentle view across the landscape bathed in golden afternoon sunlight reflects both the technical complexity and the stylistic subtlety of Van der Neer's work. The scene depicts a village beside one of the countless inland waterways of the Netherlands.
Van der Neer leads the eye into the landscape through a succession of banks lined with reeds and pollarded willows. The old houses with their red roofs are surrounded by lush vegetation, whose branches and leaves catch the light. In the foreground, two peasants are in conversation. Painted in a turbulent century, the typically Dutch terrain and rural tranquillity would likely have appealed strongly to Van der Neer's Amsterdam clientele.
