Catalogue raisonné:
The colour screenprint "Mick Jagger" from 1975 is one of Andy Warhol's most famous portrait series, in which the artist explores the boundaries between art, consumerism, and celebrity. In this work, Warhol focuses on the frontman of the Rolling Stones, a symbol of rebellion, sexuality, and the pop culture of the 1970s. The series comprises a total of ten different portraits of Jagger, created through close collaboration between the artist and the musician.
Formally, the screenprint is characterized by Warhol's distinctive combination of photographic source material and painterly intervention. The underlying black-and-white photograph is distorted by bold, contrasting color fields, expressive lines, and narrative overlays, much like in a collage. These interventions emphasize Jagger's striking facial features and expressive intensity, while simultaneously deconstructing the photographic image and transforming it into it into a symbol of pop culture.
