Eugène Boudin is known for his distinctive harbor scenes with majestic sailing ships and beach views of Normandy, peopled with elegantly dressed women and men of the French "haute société."
Inspired by the somewhat older great realists of his time, Daubigny and Corot, Boudin was also committed to depicting the humble existence of the working class. And so emerged a series of compositions that portrayed laundresses on the banks of the river Touques in Normandy.
These works are, in a sense, the antithesis of his beach scenes: In contrast to the people who enjoy themselves on the broad beaches and indulge in idleness, the laundresses labor all day long. Boudin depicts them from behind with their backs bent, focused on their arduous task. Characteristically, the figures don't turn toward each other or chat among themselves.
The sailing ship on the left edge of the picture does not glide majestically through the water, but is stranded and repaired by crewmen.
Boudin's masterful handling of color and light remains unchanged: "The laundresses offered the artist an ideal subject, enabling him to easily combine observation of human nature with the depiction of water, sky, and landscape. Boudin explored a variety of color harmonies that create rich light effects—as in tapestries." (Translated from: Hamilton, exh. cat. Glasgow Museums 1992, p. 123).
