PAIR OF PLATES WITH INDIAN FLOWERS

Strasbourg, Paul Hannong period, ca. 1745–54.
Faience decorated in overglaze enamels. Lobed, shaped rim with outlined Indian flower decoration and a butterfly. One plate with painter’s mark "G" in black.
Ø 24.5 cm.

Provenance:
- Art Dealers, Zurich.
- Peter Ducret Collection, Kilchberg; acquired from the above in 1976 and 2015.

Literature:
Jacques Bastian, "Strasbourg Faïences et porcelaines 1721–1784", vol. I, 2002, p. 199, fig. 187 (center of the plate, inv. no. 203).

The decoration of the plate, with a floral bouquet and butterfly in the center, also corresponds to examples executed in the high-temperature technique, suggesting that this may be one of the earliest plates painted in Strasbourg using a palette containing purple (according to Peter Ducret’s notes). This comparison of decoration executed in different techniques (Grand Feu and Petit Feu) is also discussed in Bastian 2002, p. 199, where this plate is illustrated.

Conditionreport:
- One plate with crazed glaze and a long hairline crack.<br>- Glaze flaking to the rims.
