STATUETTE OF A BOY DANCING - The Embden Collection

Renaissance style, Northern Italy, ca. 1800.
Bronze with patina and traces of gold lacquer. Bald boy looking slightly downward, holding his cloak. Normally, the left leg would be raised, but both legs are mounted here. On a profiled column base made of white and green marble.
H 9 cm (without base).

Provenance:
The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.

For a bronze model with similar patina, cf. William D. Wixom: Renaissance Bronzes from Ohio Collections. Cleveland, 1975, No. 66. Here, Wixom compares the statuette with Hellenistic models, which now find a new form in the humanistic style of the Renaissance. On the one hand, the Hellenistic statuette of a bearded man wearing a chlamys (cloak) is used as an example, which he holds in a similar way (MET Museum Inv. No: 07.286.96). On the other hand, the round bald head of the boy is compared with Inv. No. 21.88.173, also kept in the MET Museum.

Conditionreport:
- Bronze rubbed and with verdigris
- Minimal casting defect on the back of the head
- Base with minor chips on the edge
