RARE PLATE
Strasbourg, Paul or Balthasar Hannong period, ca. 1735–48, attributed to..
Faience decorated in high-temperature colors. Eight-lobed form. Painted with large Indian flowers and insect decoration. Unmarked.
Ø 26 cm.
Provenance:
- Peter Ducret Collection, Kilchberg; acquired from the above in 2008.
The eight-lobed form is unusual for the Strasbourg manufactory, but is documented there according to P. Ducret (Strassburger Keramik, collection catalogue, published by the Historisches Museum Basel, 1986, nos. 69 and 108). The decoration likewise does not fully correspond to the contemporary Indian flower decoration in Strasbourg, but is nevertheless closely related. A ewer dated 1747 with similar bellflowers is illustrated in Bastian ("Strasbourg" 2002, vol. I, p. 175); a teapot from the Ducret Collection painted in this high-temperature palette (Koller 2026 collection catalogue, lot 1001), cf. Bastian (ibid., pp. 204–205).
A closely related plate is in the Carabelli Collection (Pietsch 2009, p. 228, fig. 247).
According to the collection documentation, J. Bastian, in correspondence with P. Ducret, did not rule out an attribution to the Lunéville manufactory.
