Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of church music. Depicted with the attribute of the organ and often surrounded by music-making angels, she is a popular subject that numerous artists have taken up throughout art history since the 13th century. In the present large-format painting, the Symbolist painter Wilhelm Volz presents a particularly charming depiction of the saint. Surrounded by angels, each playing a different instrument, Cecilia sits absorbed in the music before a lilac bush. This charming and dynamic composition, distinguished by its pastel colouring, ranks among the artist's finest works.
