COMMODE

Rococo, Berne ca. 1745/50. By Mathäus Funk (1697–1783).
Walnut in veneer in rectangular reserves and friezed fillets. Curved body on a cut-out frame, on curved legs with bronze sabots. Front with two sans-traverse drawers. Drawers with brass fluting. Opulently gilt bronze mounts designed as rocailles, blossoms and leaves. The inside lined with colorful, marbled pasted paper. Gray/pink Oberhasli marble top. 1 key.
95 × 58 × 81 cm.

Marble top repaired. Losses and signs of use. Gilding later.

The commode on offer is an elegant work by the Bernese ebeniste Mathäus Funk. His veneer furniture is among the highest-quality products of German furniture-making art (Heinrich Kreisel/Georg Himmelheber. Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels. Volume II. Munich, 1970, pp. 326-329), but is also in part strongly oriented towards French furniture. This is illustrated by the commode on offer, which leans heavily on French models, both in terms of its proportions, but especially in the design of the bronze fittings used. Comparable commodes are depicted in: Hermann von Fischer, Fonck à Berne, Berne, 2001, pp. 102/103, Ills. 170/172.
