so-called "bibliothèque en armoire", Louis XIV, by N. SAGEOT (Nicolas Sageot, maître 1706), Paris ca. 1715/25.
Ebony and red tortoiseshell, exquisitely inlaid with engraved brass fillets in "première partie" and "contre partie"; putti making music, mascarons, birds, flowers, leaves, fillets and decorative frieze. Front with finely paneled double-doors. Opulent matte and polished gilt bronze mounts and applications; the figures on the doors applied ca. 1800: Allegories of Power, Justice and Abundance. Doors with original inner surfaces and locks. Rear wall, replaced.

Painted with Coromandel lacquer all around, with a group of figures in an idealized park and pagoda landscape on a polychrome background. Front with hinged writing surface lined with green, gold-impressed leather, a drawer on top, and a compartment with double-doors. Fitted interior with fine marquetry with a central compartment with 3 drawers on each side, below 3 large compartments arranged in 2 rows. Gilt bronze mounts and sabots, in part replaced. Shaped "Campan" marble top. Lacquer paintwork retouched.
