MICROCARVING IN RELIEF "MADONNA OF THE ROSE BOWER"
Late Byzantine, probably 17th century. Athos region, Greece.
Boxwood carved in relief and partially openwork. In the central medallion, an enthroned Mary with Child on a rose bush surrounded by 10 medallions of saints, round scroll in Greek, figures of Melchizedek, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob identified by Greek titles in the corners. In an assorted, carved, and gilt wooden frame, covered with red velour.
Without frame: 13.4 × 9.8 cm. Frame: 35 × 23.5 cm.
