'EMPIRE DEJEUNER' WITH PORTRAITS OF THE FAMILY OF KING MAX I. JOSEPH OF BAVARIA
Nymphenburg, ca. 1815. Painting after lithographs by Ferdinand Piloty, after drawings by Joseph Karl Stieler from 1812–14.
Empire pattern “antique C” with painted oval portrait medallions en grisaille of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (1756–1825), Queen Caroline of Bavaria and their daughters, in etched gilt frames decorated with leaf wreaths on a powder-blue background. Comprising: a coffee pot (Mod.213), two cups and saucers (Mod.285/339), a sugar bowl (Mod.256) and a milk jug (Mod.223). Marked with the impressed lozenge shield and II, various incised marks, the sugar bowl not marked. The tray is missing.
H 19 cm (coffee pot), 16 cm (milk jug), 12 cm (sugar bowl), 6.5 cm (cups).
The handle with a small chip and a crack, handle of one cup restored.
Depicted are, in addition to the Bavarian King Max I (1756-1825) and his second wife Queen Caroline Friederike (1776-1841), née Princess of Baden (coffee pot), their daughters Princess Elisabeth (1801-1873), later wife of Frederick William IV of Prussia and Princess Amalie (1801–1877), who later became the wife of King John I of Saxony (milk jug), Princess Sophie (1805–1872), who later became the wife of Archduke Franz Carl of Austria, and Princess Marie (1805–1877), who later became the wife of King Frederick Augustus II of Saxony (sugar bowl), Princess Luise Ludovika (1808–1892), who later married Duke Max in Bavaria, and Princess Caroline (1810–1821) (cups).
Piloty's lithographs "Steindrucke mit den Porträtbildnissen I.K.H. den Prinzessinnen von Bayern" were purchased in 1814/15 for the Manufactory's collection of templates.
A comparable déjeuner can be found in K. Hantschmann, Nymphenburger Porzellan, Munich 1996, pp. 275-276, cat. no. 098, which also includes references to other services with these royal portraits, which were evidently very popular at the time.
