Marble portraits of Egyptian-Hellenistic rulers, the so-called Ptolemies, form a separate body of representations of rulers. Their reign spanned almost 300 years. In particular, the portraits produced between the reigns of Ptolemy IV (221 BC–205 BC) and Ptolemy VIII (170 BC–163 BC) make it difficult to identify individual rulers. Many of these marble portraits were reworked in order to depict the current king who was in power at the time. Furthermore, the heads were greatly idealized, making an exact attribution to a ruler a complex issue. For a similar portrait head of Ptolemy IV, see Helmut Kyrieleis: Bildnisse der Ptolemäer. Berlin, 1975, p. 47, No. 171, Pl. 36.
