MANTEL CLOCK “METAMORPHOSES OF ZEUS”

Empire, France, around 1810/20. The dial signed J. J. Lepaute Hr. du Roi & de la Ville, Rue St. Honoré 247 (Jean-Joseph Lepaute, 1768–1846). Base monogrammed TU (?) and numbered 4704 on the reverse.
Finely chased and punched bronze, and gilt and blackened metal. Semi-circular case on a rectangular, stepped base on round feet. The case featuring Leda and the Swan, as well as applied bronze reliefs with Zeus as a bull abducting Europe, and Zeus as an eagle with Psyche. The plinth with bronze decorations of Zeus' head flanked by harpies and bundles of lightning. White enamel dial with Roman hours, gilt minute and hour hands. Parisian movement with half-hour strike on bell. 1 key.
45 × 15 × 55 cm.

The back cover and figural finial have been removed (screws missing). The dial has restored losses around the winding holes. The going and striking mechanisms are currently functional but in need of cleaning. The gilding is rubbed. Pendulum incomplete.

Cf. an iconographically identical pendulum by Gaston Jolly in Tardy: La pendule française. Vol. II, Paris 1969, p. 389. There, the figure is interpreted as Ganymede and Zeus as an eagle.
