Antonio Calderara's oeuvre is marked by a constant drive towards the absolute reduction of forms to their most essential elements. Calderara's minimalist works are characterised by a deep poetic inner calm. The delicate pastel shades of his colour palette, in which he composes the mostly small to medium-format and strictly geometric works, create an almost meditative atmosphere in their calming simplicity, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect.
Calderara's endeavour to progressively condense the formal language of his works also reflects the trends in Italian art of the post-war period, which sought a break with traditional, figurative representations and increasingly turned to abstraction. In his exploration of the possibilities and limits of this abstraction and his constant desire to rethink the relationship between space, colour and form, he sought a close exchange with contemporaries such as Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers and ultimately also influenced a new generation of artists himself. His work played a central role particularly in the field of minimalist art and concrete painting, which became increasingly important from the 1960s onwards.
The two works to be offered here at auction, both oil on panel, also fit seamlessly into his impressive oeuvre. Lot 3403, entitled ‘Pittura’, is a very reduced but no less powerful work. While this work invites the viewer to make ever new associations, it also creates a quiet retreat for relaxation and contemplation, as does the painting ‘Spazio continuo’, lot 3401, with its delicate segmentation and gentle colour gradients.
