PAINTED CUPBOARD
Conrad Starck (1769-1817), Appenzell, 18th century. Inscribed: Bartlime (probably Bartolome) Nef Anna Schweitzer, and dated: 1811.
Pinewood, finely painted with rocailles, reserves and oval medallions featuring village scenes, on a blue ground, in part finished "en faux marbre". Front with double-paneled doors and beveled edges. The door panels painted with a flower vase and a bouquet tied together with a ribbon and bow. Brass escutcheon. Mostly original paintwork. 1 key.
131 x 57 x 180 cm.
- Somewhat rubbed in some areas and with losses to the colors
- Slightly retouched
Due to the almost academic paintwork and the sculpted rocailles, the cabinet on offer can be attributed to the Appenzell "rustic painter" Conrad Starck.
Along with Bartholomäus Lämmler and Johannes Bartholomäus Thäler, Conrad Starck is one of the best known "rustic painters" from the Appenzell and Toggenburg region. Examples of his craftsmanship can be found in the museums in St. Gallen, Appenzell and Stein.
Provenance:
- Purchased from Hans Ulrich Fröhlich, St. Gallen.
- Swiss private property
