WEDDING CASKET, SO-CALLED “COFANETTO”

Venice, 15th century. Workshop of the Embriachi.
Bone carved in relief, poplar and walnut. Rectangular body with a hinged lid shaped like a flattened mansard roof and an iron handle on a flat, profiled base. The sides with bone plaques in relief depicting a man and a woman, as well as armed warriors as cornerstones. The lid with bone plates in relief with cherubs holding hands, foliage and cartouches, one of which is engraved with “ADEFONS REX”. Iron lock and later key.
19 × 12 × 15.5 cm.

Heavily restored and cleaned. Supplements.

The success of the Embriachi workshop and the associated demand for their finely carved ivory and bone work is evident not only in secular objects, but also in sacred objects, which over time were produced almost serially and also imitated by other workshops. Among them, wedding gifts, such as this wedding casket, were particularly prized.
Ewald Berger: Prunk-Kassetten. Europäische Meisterwerke aus acht Jahrhunderten. Graz 1998, pp. 89-101, with an illustration of a comparable wedding casket, p. 100, fig. 38. Other similar examples with the same iconography: Paul Emil Schwerzmann: Coffres et Cassettes Collections Privées. Zug, 1996, p. 36, and a wedding casket in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. no. 4719-1859).
The main difference between the wedding casket on offer and the comparative models is the absence of the geometric inlays that form a type of frame around the scenes. These were typical of the high-quality pieces produced by the Embriachi workshop.
