From the 1830s onwards, Charles-Théodore Frère repeatedly travelled to the Orient, visiting Algeria, Egypt and Syria, among other places. The impressions he gathered on his extensive journeys formed the basis for his paintings, in which he depicted Oriental street scenes, exotic bazaars and atmospheric landscapes around the Nile and the North African desert. The charming painting offered here is particularly distinguished by its interplay of light and shadow and its warm colouring.
