LARGE BOW FIBULA

Hungary, Ostrogothic, second half of the 5th century AD.
Silver, opulently decorated with wedge-cut ornamentation. Semicircular head plate with three bosses (originally five) and a lozenge-shaped foot plate with spiral tendril decoration. Highly domed bow with three notched silver-wire ridges. Ending in an animal head. Setting for seven almandine cabochons, 4 of which are present.
15.5 × 6 cm.

來源:
- The Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger Collection (1903–1990 & 1918–1999), Lucerne (Inv. No. K723P).
- Swiss private collection, Lucerne, acquired from the above ca. 1974.
- By inheritance in the same Swiss family, Lucerne.

Cf. a pair of bow fibulae in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (Inv. No. Antikensammlung VIIa 104). This pair also lacks the two side bosses on the head plate, although the shape and decoration are almost identical. Although the inlays are missing entirely from this pair, the gilding is well-preserved.
