This work is one of the rare reliefs that Hans Arp produced in slate. Arp ordinarily worked with materials such as wood, brass, bronze, aluminum, plaster, and marble in creating his reliefs. His choice of slate for this work makes it exceptional within his oeuvre.
The delicate, organically curved shapes that emerge from the dark stone surface are typical of Arp's abstract imagery. They evoke forms from nature without explicitly depicting them. The imagination is given free rein.
In "Strange Fruit," Arp blends material and form in a poetic mode: The hard, cool stone contrasts with the soft, flowing lines that suggest movement and lightness. The interplay of light and shadow on the dull slate surface creates a special sensuality.
