Maler, Plastiker und Architekt.

Max Bill bildet sich zuerst als Silberschmied, ab 1924 an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich aus, bevor er ab 1927 für zwei Jahre in Dessau am Bauhaus Architektur studiert.Zu dieser Zeit unterrichten Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy und Oskar Schlemmer dort - dies sind prägende und richtungsweisende Zeiten für den jungen Max Bill. Im Jahr 1929 kehrt Bill zurück in die Schweiz und lässt sich in Zürich nieder. Er arbeitet zunächst als Architekt und beschäftigt sich anschliessend immer mehr mit der Malerei, Plastik und mit Produktgestaltung. Angeregt von den Überlegungen des Künstlers Theo van Doesburg, formuliert Bill die Prinzipien der Konkreten Kunst durch Anwendung von Mathematik und Geometrie in seinem Werk.

Mit 25 Jahren wird er in die Pariser Künstlergruppe “Abstraction Création” aufgenommen. Seine Mitgliedschaft ermöglicht ihm Ausstellungen an der Seite von Ikonen wie Piet Mondrian, Jean Arp und Georges Vantongerloo. Seit den 1930er Jahren ist der Winterthurer zu einem der wichtigsten Wortführer der Zürcher Konkreten geworden. Mit seinem berühmten Text “Konkrete Gestaltung ” liefert er im Jahr 1936 der gestalterischen Praxis ein theoretisches Fundament, das für die Entwicklung nicht nur der Schweizer Nachkriegskunst – besonders der Zürcher Schule der Konkreten mit u.a. Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg und Richard Paul Lohse – von grösster Bedeutung ist. 1944–1945 wird Max Bill mit dem Unterricht der Formlehre an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich betraut.

Im selben Jahr wird die Zeitschrift Abstrakt Konkret ins Leben gerufen; Bill verfasst Monografien, Kataloge und Artikel, die auf seinen Schriften des Abstrakten Konstruktivismus basieren. Sein grösstes Bauprojekt folgt im Jahr 1950, die Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, wo er auch ab 1951 für fünf Jahre Rektor und Leiter der Abteilung für Architektur und Produktform ist. Nach zahlreichen Ausstellungsplanungen und -beiträgen unterrichtet Max Bill von 1967 bis 1974 als Professor für Umweltgestaltung an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. Ausserdem ist Bill Mitglied zahlreicher Künstler- und Architektenvereinigungen sowie Ehrenmitglied verschiedener Akademien. 1994 nimmt er die Ehrendoktorwürde der ETH Zürich entgegen. Max Bill stirbt 1994 in Berlin.
