Sam Francis findet erst durch eine Kriegsverletzung während des Zweiten Weltkrieges zur Kunst. Flach auf dem Rücken liegend aufgrund einer Wirbelsäulenverletzung beobachtet er fasziniert das Spiel des Lichts an der Zimmerdecke. Als er schliesslich entlassen wird steht der Entschluss fest, sein Leben zu ändern. 1923 in Kalifornien geboren, studiert Francis zunächst Medizin und Psychologie an der University of California in Berkeley bevor er sich zum Kriegsdienst als US-Kampfpilot meldet. Nach seiner Genesung wendet er sich der Kunst zu und studiert von 1948 bis 1950 Kunstgeschichte und Bildende Kunst an derselben Universität.

Seinen persönlichen Stil findet Sam Francis in den 1950er Jahren, in denen er sich einige Zeit auch in Paris und Japan aufhält. Er verbindet Action Painting und Colour Field Painting aus dem Abstrakten Expressionismus mit Tachismus und den Einflüssen der Japanischen Kunst und Kalligraphie. Seine Malerei zeichnet sich durch gesättigte Farbigkeit und malerische Spontaneität aus. Aufgenommen in die Reihe der jungen europäischen Avantgarde, werden seine Bilder nun auf Ausstellungen in Paris, London und Bern gezeigt. Die Teilnahme an der Ausstellung "Twelve Americans" 1956 im New Yorker Museum of Modern Art macht Francis auch in Amerika bekannt. In diese Zeit fällt der stilistische Wechsel von den flächendeckenden Kompositionen in monochromen Werten zu bunten "Farbinseln" auf der weissen Leinwand. In den 1960er Jahren zieht Francis zurück nach Kalifornien und entwickelt eine sehr persönliche Form des spontanen und gestischen Drippings. Mit kreisenden und spritzenden Bewegungen lenkt er die Öl-, Acryl- und Aquarellfarben über die Bildträger. In seinen "Gitterbildern" der 1970er Jahre ist die Bildfläche mit netzartigen Strukturen bedeckt. Neben dem "Action Painting" hat er sich auch anderen Techniken wie Lithografie, Radierung und Monotypie zugewandt. Grosse Auftragsarbeiten für Wandbilder bestimmen seine letzte künstlerische Schaffensphase. Sam Francis verstirbt am 4.11.1994 in Santa Monica.
