The monkey band was part of the "singerie" genre which was very popular in the mid-18th century and used to portray human weaknesses. Even the Marquise de Pompadour owned a 19-part monkey band which she acquired from the Parisian art dealer Lazare Duvaux in 1753. The band members were often based on drawings by the animal portrait painter Christophe Huet (1700-1759).
