'Le vieux pont à Bruges' is a splendid example of Auguste Herbin's early creative phase. The painting was created in 1906 during a visit to Belgium. During this stay, Herbin produced only a small number of works, making them relatively rare on the art market. In them, he depicts the medieval city of Bruges, with its winding canals and ancient façades, in a frenzy of colour. The present work shows the old city bridge from a distant view across the canal, with the old buildings of the city in the background. The view is framed by plants and trees in rich shades of green.
Herbin is among those young artists who, following the notorious Fauve exhibition at the Salon d'Automne in 1905, adopted the vibrant colours and bold brushwork of the Fauvists Matisse, Derain, and Vlaminck. Thus in 1906, the same year as the present painting, Herbin exhibited with the group at the Salon des Indépendants. 'Le vieux pont à Bruges' is an outstanding example from this brief but significant period in Herbin's early career. The intense palette hints at his later, mature style, in which he conveys the symbolic and allegoric power of colour in his abstract forms.
