‘Gelée et Soleil à Tournedos’ was painted around the turn of the century, at the height of Gustave Loiseau's artistic career. The painting depicts a group of farmhouses on the banks of the Seine in the small village of Tournedos-sur-Seine, an area Loiseau enjoyed spending his time. The town and its surrounding area with its majestic river inspired the artist and led him to return repeatedly throughout the course of his career. The evocative composition presents winter morning in which the rays of the sun create a wintery shimmer across the frosty landscape. The vigorous, colourfully dappled brushwork is an example of the impeccable virtuosity of the Impressionist technique that Loiseau had achieved at the end of the 1890s, allowing him to capture not only the delicate effects of light, but also the transient mood of the atmosphere.

By 1900 Loiseau was already a well-known painter. ‘Gelée et Soleil à Tournedos’ was purchased from the artist one year after its creation by Loiseau's patron, the Paris dealer Paul Durant-Ruel. The painting was last on the market in 1964 and has remained in the same family for nearly 60 years.
