This painting, a rare, small-format work by the short-lived artist Abraham Bosschaert, is representative of the Middelburg painter’s work (cf. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Erika: Holländische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, 1995, pp. 156-158). Abraham Bosschaert was the youngest son of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573-1621), considered to be one of the inventors of the floral still life as a distinct genre. His brother, Ambrosius the Younger (1609-1645) most likely continued to teach Abraham after the death of his father, as did Abraham’s uncle on his mother’s side, Balthasar van der Ast (1593-1657).

Dr. Fred G. Meijer confirmed the authorship on the basis of a photograph and describes the present painting as a characteristic work by Abraham Bosschaert.
