MANTEL CLOCK "CUPID AND PSYCHE"

Empire/French Restoration, Paris ca. 1815. The dial signed Galle Rue Vivienne à Paris (Claude Galle, 1758-1815). The bronzes after a model by Claude Michallon (1752-1799).
Bronze, patinated brown and parcel-gilt. "Griotte rouge" marble. Cupid and Psyche leaning on the rounded clock case. On a rectangular plinth with winged paw feet. Bronze decoration designed as a lyre, palmettes and a rosette. White enamel dial with the hours in Roman numerals. Parisian movement, striking the 1/2-hour on bell. 1 key.
52 × 22 × 83 cm.

Restored, bronze applications and one wing need to be reattached. Minor cracks on Psyche's back and in the movement.

The design for this bronze group of figures goes back to the French sculptor Claude Michallon (1752-1799), who designed the model ca. 1814. The model is depicted in: H. Ottomeyer, P.
