SMALL GOLD AND PEARL STOPPER DESIGNED AS A MONKEY HEAD

Probably 17th century.
Pearl, gold, and red glass eyes. Designed in the shape of a monkey's head. Stopper, probably for a flask.
H 2,1 cm.

Provenance:
The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.

The pearl stopper on offer is reminiscent of a deer-shaped finial, also made of natural pearl, which can be seen on a Russian lidded goblet made of carnelian from the Al Thani Collection at the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris (Inv. No. ATC070c). That object dates from the first half of the 17th century, with supplements dating from the 19th century.
